Lane Community College (LLC) health clinic located in Oregon may be dealing with a serious breach. An article over on Health IT Security discusses the computer virus a technician at the hospital discovered, which may have led to exposure of some patients PHI.
The Oregon college health clinic stated the virus may have been sending the names, addresses, phone numbers, diagnoses, and Social Security numbers to an unknown third party for over a year.”
The virus discovered by the technician had been infecting the computer from March 2016 to February 2017. LCC has notified patients whose privacy may have been exposed, by the virus, of the situation. Notifications went to approximately 2,500 individuals.
The Vice President of College Services at LCC has stated that there is no evidence indicating that the virus transmitted patient information, but that the possibility does exist.
Around 20 additional computers were given thorough examinations to ensure no viruses had corrupted additional systems. LCC confirmed that those additional computers had not been infected.
To mitigate any further problems, LCC advised patients monitor their bank accounts for suspicious activity and report any perceived threats to the police.”
According to the Health IT Security, LCC also encouraged patients to “report the data breach to their banks, credit bureaus and credit card companies” as an additional precaution.
